Making a Universal Serial Bus (USB) security key requires installing a software program, such as Desktop USB Security Key, ID USB Lock Key or USB Lock Pro on a USB flash drive. This will enable you to lock and unlock your desktop or laptop computer by simply removing and inserting the USB flash drive into a USB port. However, you will first need to obtain a USB flash drive to use for the security key.
Instructions
Desktop USB Security
- 1Go to the download page for Desktop USB Security Key. Click the "Download" button to save the file to your desktop.
- 2Insert the USB flash drive into a USB port on your computer. Click the "Start" button and then select the "Computer" option. Double-click the icon for your USB drive.
- 3Copy the downloaded file from the desktop to your USB drive. Double-click on the file to begin the installation.
- 4Click the "Yes" button to start the application. The program will then create a session key that is unique to your computer and write it to the USB flash drive. You will also see a "Desktop USB Security Key" icon on the desktop.
- 5Insert the USB flash drive into a USB port on your desktop or laptop computer. Double-click the "Desktop USB Security Key" icon to run the program.
- 6Click the "Yes" button and the program will now be running in the background on your system.
- 7Remove the USB flash drive from the computer. This will put Windows into "locked" mode and will also prevent the use of the keyboard.
- 8Insert the USB flash drive back into a USB port and your system will be unlocked.
ID USB Key Lock
- 1Go to the ID Security Suite website and click the "Purchase" button. Enter the payment information and then download the program on your system.
- 2Double-click the downloaded file to install the program. Double-click the ID USB Key Lock icon to run the program.
- 3Right-click the ID USB Key icon that is in the system tray. Select the "Admin Keys" option from the menu.
- 4Select the drive letter for your USB flash drive on the left. Click the "Generate Key" button to create a unique security key. Click the "X" in the upper right corner to close the window.
- 5Right-click the ID USB Lock Key in the system tray and select "Lock Computer" from the menu. Remove the USB flash drive from the computer.
USB Lock Pro
- 1Go to the Speed Apps website and click the "Download" button. Save the setup file to your desktop.
- 2Double-click the downloaded file to install the software.
- 3Insert the USB flash drive into a USB port on your desktop or laptop computer.
- 4Double-click the USB Lock Pro icon on your desktop to run the program. A unique security key will be created and stored on the USB flash drive.

Tips & Warnings
- Turning off your computer will terminate the Desktop USB Security Key program.
- If you lose your USB flash drive you will not be able to access your system.
