With all the modern application and tools, it is really lame to create new folders in the same old fashion way we did on Windows 98. Though Windows has grown lots of features, it has over looked some traditional ways of doing things and failed to improve on them. One such thing is creating new folders by using the right click menu.
There are other ways to spice up the folder creation process. Smart Folders is one tool that helps us do this by simple drag and drop. Let us see how.
What is Smart Folders?
Smart Folders is a small, light weight tool for Windows that helps us leave the ancient folder creation method behind. With this, it becomes possible to create folders by just dropping one app over the other or one file over the other.
With this simple activity, selected groups of files and application are moved into a new folder while the user is asked to give the folder a name. It gives us some help in folder management and organization.
How to Get Going?
Follow the link to download and install Smart Folders. Run the downloaded exe file to see a small app window appear. Hit the install button to make things happening.
Now, you may select a group of files and or applications, drag them and drop them over another file or application. While doing so, you should notice whether you are shown “Move” or “Open with Setup Application”.
With the “Move” option all is fine and you may proceed. Generally, all works fine with non-app files, and you may enter a name for your folder. In case a folder with the same name exists, you will need to enter a new name. It does not auto merge them.
Register App Files
When you see your drag and drop activity showing “Open with Setup Application”, folder creation will not work, because you are trying drop a file on an app and Windows tries to open it. So, you will need to register the types like .exe, .bat etc. to make them inherit the same property.
On the interface, enter the file extension and hit register. Your file type will be added to the list. By default, it has all types registered marked by the symbol *. Yet we need to do the registration for some of them.
To unregister a file type, select it and hit the unregister button. In order to uninstall the application, do it from the interface itself.
Conclusion
This application has just enhanced the way I create folders now. It keeps me one step ahead whenever I want to group files under a single folder. I just drag and drop my files one over the other and folder creation falls in as an integrated approach.
