Mobile operating systems can be replaced with a later version, such as Android 2.1 to version 2.2, or can be replaced with an entirely new operating system. For example, some Windows 7 mobiles allow a change of OS to Android 2.1. Upgrading a mobile OS can be risky, as it could invalidate the warranty on the phone. For those people who want to improve their phone and have the latest software available and are not averse to taking technical risks, it is well worth it.
Tips Guide :
- Download a rooting program and root the phone.
- The process of rooting means that root access to the phone is given so that essential tasks can be undertaken, which would not normally be available without root access. Rooting a phone can be achieved in a number of ways, including using a downloaded application from the phone’s software provider, or via other packages such as “One Click Lag Fix” on Android including an “update.zip” setup file.
- Obtain the correct Read Only Memory (ROM) files, installation programs (such as Odin for the Galaxy S) and relevant instructions for the ROM version to be updated. These ROMs can usually be found on relevant forums and related information from the Internet for your specific phone.
- Back up any phone data or information you wish to keep. Once the process of updating the phone’s ROM is under way, all information previously on the phone will be completely lost and unrecoverable. For this reason it is very important that you take a backup of your phone’s contents and place it where you can restore the information for later use.
- Copy the ROM files to your phone carefully from your computer, following any instructions provided for your phone and model, via the provided USB connection cable. At this point the phone will be effectively wiped of everything on it. It will download the files, partition the phone’s memory (similar to a computer installation procedure) and replace the previously existing information on the hard drive of the phone.
- Reboot the phone. If all has gone well, it should be okay to use. If not, look at any steps that might have gone wrong and retry them.
Note :
- The rooting application provided to root your phone should include a help section giving step-by-step instructions for the rooting process.
- It is important that all files obtained are compatible for the version of the operating system you are installing.
- Keep the files in a safe place on your PC so that you know where to locate them when you are ready to upgrade your phone.
- Do not remove the USB cable during the update process. This is very important, as to do so may mean that the hard drive of the phone becomes corrupted. The only way to fix this problem is via the manufacturer of the phone or a specialist mobile phone repair shop. This can be a costly business and may invalidate your warranty.
